Acupuncture is a safe and popular treatment option for both male and female fertility support. Research has shown that acupuncture has positive effects on reproductive hormones, ovarian and uterine blood flow, ovulation rate, stress, anxiety, and healthy sperm count.
Acupuncture for infertility is a safe option that reduces stress and anxiety, regulates hormones related to follicular development and implantation, improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, and can improve ovulation rate and endometrial thickness.
In men, acupuncture can improve the count of normal, healthy sperm. Treatment also aims to provide individualised insight into diet and lifestyle factors that may affect fertility and underlying reasons for difficulty conceiving. It can also be a treatment option for threatened miscarriage.
Infertility is defined as the inability to get pregnant despite frequent, unprotected sexual intercourse for over a year.
Infertility can occur due to a number of reasons related to male, female, or a combination of both partners in a couple.
Some women facing issues conceiving may have other symptoms such as irregular or absent menstruation or certain medical conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovarian syndrome, or poor ovarian reserve.
Some men may have hormonal imbalance signs such as changes in hair growth or sexual function, medical conditions such as testicular, prostate or sexual problems, or low sperm count or other sperm problems.
Chinese Medicine recognises a number of different reasons why a couple may have trouble conceiving. Treatments aim to provide fertility support, rather than treating “infertility”. Acupuncture treatment may involve the use of moxabustion for low sperm motility or cold in the uterus. Patients’ individual disharmony occurring in their bodies is identified to provide customised treatment.
Based on the root causes, types of infertility, and the stage of treatment the patient is in, there are three main approaches to treating infertility in Chinese acupuncture:
Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine that takes a holistic approach. Acupuncturists will take a detailed health history, examine the tongue, feel the pulse, and possibly perform additional physical examinations. To begin the acupuncture treatment, fine, pre-sterilised needles are gently placed on acupoints on various areas of the body. The needles are usually retained for between five and 30 minutes, and the entire session will take up to an hour. Acupuncturists may also use other treatment techniques such as cupping, moxibustion, or auriculotherapy, depending on the patient’s condition.
When choosing an acupuncturist, it’s important to verify that they are registered with one of the two regulatory bodies for acupuncturists in New Zealand. At Ponsonby Wellness, highly trained acupuncturists are recognised ACC treatment providers and hold a minimum four-year Bachelor of Health Science that consists of a combination of both traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Biomedical training.Call us or visit our clinic personally to learn more.
